Constructed from cast concrete, Big Listener’s specific, parabolic forms allow the sculpture to function as a passive amplification device, creating a mechanism for individuals to listen to a range of evident and subtle sonic components within Franconia Sculpture Park’s landscape, including both human and non-human entities. The piece invites questions about the labor of listening and what it takes to perceive our surroundings, each other, and even ourselves in an increasingly dynamic world. My creative collaborator, Naomi Crocker, and I presented a large-scale, string instrument inspired by King Harald Blåtand's legacy of unifying fragmented entities. During his reign (958-986 CE), Blåtand facilitated the reconstruction of the Jelling runestones, as well as numerous other public works, and united the tribes of Denmark into a single kingdom. It was this latter effort that, over a thousand years later, would serve as an analogy for the unification of personal devices and the inspiration for the Bluetooth technology name. Individuals are invited to immerse themselves in two large containers, which use an arrangement of microphones and speakers to respond to even the smallest changes in both the internal and external environments. The two containers have been designed to produce consistent yet variational feedback created by the reaction of their proximities to one another, simulating a continuous dialogue. Once inside, individuals integrate with the containers' feedback, encouraging a more intimate relationship between themselves and their immediate environment. Crocker and myself). Regarding our contribution, we explained: With close to 1 billion annual visits worldwide, IKEA stores facilitate modern-day pilgrimages, preaching the doctrine of creating “a better everyday life for the many people”. This reliquary box pays homage to artifacts collected by religious pilgrims in the medieval era via 12 found objects gathered at the suburban Bloomington (MN) IKEA. The box’s contents investigate various themes, including capitalism, sustainability, interior vs. exterior topography, affordability, and worship, while raising questions about contemporary delineations between material and spiritual pilgrimages.Pilgrim CHAT Abstract: Pilgrims of the early medieval world traveling to the Holy Land transformed sacred topography into collectible artifacts by archiving soil, rocks, and pieces of relics into portable reliquary boxes (see: examples from the Sancta Sanctorum treasure in the Vatican). The boxes allowed travellers to access their devotional experiences by interacting with these blessed materials after their journeys ended. Three iterations were eventually presented as part of the Walker's First Free Saturday and Sensory Friendly Sunday (SFS) programs, the latter of which is designed for children, teens, and adults with sensory processing differences, autism spectrum disorder, or developmental disabilities. School of Fish was next adapted for Pancake House (Minneapolis, MN) in December 2019 as a featured installation of In Situ: an experimental festival, presented by NADA (Michael Masaru Flora and Christian Langheinrich), exploring the boundaries of sound and music and featuring both local and national artists. Resonating sound waves can touch the entire body, resulting in unique, internalized experiences that facilitate self-reflection. School of Fish is an interactive sound installation developed in response to these notions. Within the School of Fish environment, people can learn together how sound behaves in unpremeditated contexts, experiencing the free coalescence of form. Together with my friend and collaborator Jaak Jensen, we designed a multi-channel array of sonar sensors and loudspeakers that respond to individuals’ movement. The technology allowed us to map a room with multiple sonar sensors so that, depending on how and where a person moved within the space, they produced varying audible results. School of Fish decontextualizes and complicates traditional notions of music pedagogy and performance. It emphasizes the ways in which play and natural movement contribute to music-making and rejects the notion that musicians and composers must possess formal musical backgrounds. <img width="3840" plant species, ramps (Allium tricoccum). The event was part of the 2019 iteration of Field Experience and included a deep listening exercise, ramp forage, and community-building through collaborative pizza-making and a shared meal. Funded by a Visual Arts Fund Grant with support from the Andy Warhol Foundation, Field Experience is an annual program founded by Julka Almquist aimed at inspiring a sense of reciprocity with nature
